Ferndale Earthquake Reconnaissance & Webinar

Designing for functional recovery does not mean designing for no damage, but rather designing to prevent damage that prevents the building from being occupiable and functional. Our analytical methods for estimating functional recovery times (mentioned in the earlier article in this newsletter) depend heavily on what damage can/cannot be accommodated while the building remains functional.

5th International Workshop on SPONSE

SP3 Senior Research Engineer, Dave Welch, Ph.D., was invited by the Applied Technology Council (ATC) to serve on the scientific committee to be a part of the review process and development of the workshop proceedings.

The Fifth International Workshop on Seismic Performance of Non-Structural Elements (5SPONSE) took place on the campus of Stanford University in Palo Alto, California (USA) on December 5 to 7, 2022.

2022 NCSEA Summit

SP3 Sr. Associate, Aaron Malatesta, presents on applications for seismic risk assessment, methodologies and recent SP3 comparison study results of other available methods at the 2022 NCSEA conference in Chicago, IL. This presentation aligned with the conference’s focus on the importance of the practical application of advanced technologies in structural design of buildings and implications of new tools with upcoming building code changes.

New International Sites in SP3-RiskModel

The SP3-RiskModel has now been extended to work seamlessly for international sites, leveraging the modeling automations previously only available for sites in the United States. Please see our SP3 Knowledge Base article for more of the technical details!

2022 SEAOC Convention

The SP3 Team participated in the 2022 Structural Engineering Association of California (SEAOC) conference and was thrilled to have SP3 Senior Associate, D. Jared DeBock, PhD, PE represent our team by presenting one of our latest ground breaking projects: A practical design procedure for steel moment frames with fluid viscous dampers.

ATC-138 Results – Functional Recovery Workshop

Dr. D. Jared DeBock recently presented state-of-the-art functional recovery predictions for code-conforming buildings at the Functional Recovery Workshop hosted by the Applied Technology Council (ATC) with funding from FEMA.

12th National Conference on Earthquake Engineering

The SP3 team was thrilled to attend, exhibit and present at the 2022 12th U.S. National Conference on Earthquake Engineering (12NCEE), hosted by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) every 4 years in conjunction with federal and local partners. The convention was held at Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, UT, from June 27 to July 1, 2022.
