Our mission is to enable and facilitate rapid and advanced building-specific seismic resilience and risk assessments for all buildings. We envision a world in which building-specific seismic risk is well understood. We believe that this will facilitate the design of resilient buildings, improve community resilience, and support robust decision making for mortgage and insurance risk.

Curt Haselton and Jack Baker founded Haselton Baker Risk Group in 2014 and have worked together for nearly two decades to quantify and reduce risk from earthquakes. These activities have included fundamental research projects, technology transfer projects, and industry projects that utilize research tools in the real world.

Through this work, we observed that advanced seismic risk assessment methods were rarely utilized in structural engineering practice, and that the methods used in the insurance industry were class-based and not building-specific. While the relevant knowledge was available, there were no tools that enabled rapid assessments.

Given our research experiences and backgrounds, we saw a chance to address these problems.

SP3 was created to produce these analysis methods and provide a software that enables cutting-edge resilient design and risk assessment using advanced building-specific risk assessment technologies.

When equipped with the tools to comprehensively assess building performance, we believe that structural designers can increase seismic resilience and that owners and insurers can better understand their risk and make better decisions.
