Resilient Design Coalition Webinar #1 – Overview of the Resilient Design Coalition and Summary of Recent Building Code Development for Resilient Design for Functional Recovery (by Curt Haselton and Reid Zimmerman)
The Resilient Design Coalition Introductory Webinar, held on February 18, 2025, introduced the new coalition’s mission to advance the adoption of resilient and functional recovery design practices within future U.S. building codes. Led by Dr. Curt Haselton (Haselton Baker Risk Group, CSU Chico) and Reid Zimmerman (KPFF Consulting Engineers), the session reviewed the 25-year evolution of the resilient design movement, recent progress in the Building Seismic Safety Council’s Functional Recovery Task Committee (FRTC), and upcoming efforts to quantify design parameters for additional structural systems. Supported by the Charles Pankow Foundation and industry partners, the Coalition aims to expand the technical basis for functional recovery provisions in the 2026 NEHRP Recommended Seismic Provisions, supported by targeted research, collaboration, and outreach.
