Resilient Design

About

The Long Beach Civic Center project has demonstrated that resilience based design is feasible and cost effective. The building was designed to have low repair cost and virtually no downtime.

Nabih Yousef Associates Structural Engineers and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP used SP3 iteratively in the design process to meet resilience targets using the FEMA P-58 and REDi analysis methods.

Based on the owner’s target resilience level, the building achieved less than 2% loss and approximately one week reoccupancy time for a design-level earthquake, compared to 10-15% loss and 6-12 months of downtime for a typical code-compliant building design.
