Casa Adelante is a 9-story affordable-housing building for seniors located in San Francisco’s Mission neighborhood. The developer MEDA and co-developer Chinatown Community Development Center hired Mar Structural Design to design the building for structural resilience.
The engineers at Mar used SP3-Design (now SP3-RiskModel Advanced) to achieve a Gold USRC score by using rocking RC walls with dampers; in doing so, they were able to reduce expected losses to less than 10% for design-level shaking, and this resilient design only cost $100k (0.24% of construction cost).
