2022 SEAOC Convention
D.J. DeBock, PhD, PE, Presentation: A Practical Design Procedure for Steel Moment Frames with Fluid Viscous Dampers
The SP3 Team participated in the 2022 Structural Engineering Association of California (SEAOC) conference and was thrilled to have SP3 Senior Associate, D. Jared DeBock, PhD, PE represent our team by presenting one of our latest ground breaking projects: A practical design procedure for steel moment frames with fluid viscous dampers. The new design procedure, developed in collaboration with Taylor Devices Inc., follows ASCE 7 chapter 12 design methods (rather than chapter 18), so no nonlinear analysis or peer review will be required. The design procedure is validated by ICC-ES AC494 and FEMA P695 and is on track for ICC-ES approval near the end of the year. Check out our presentation about the Taylor Damped Moment Frame (TDMFTR) below.
We are excited that this project is already generating significant interest within the structural engineering community, because supplemental damping is an excellent tool for making resilient buildings. If you would like to inquire further about this project, please feel free to reach out to the HB-Risk team or to Nathan Canney at Taylor Devices (nathancanney@taylordevices.com).
This presentation aligned with the conference’s focus on the importance of the practical application of these advanced technologies for design of new buildings, retrofit of existing buildings, and implications of each with upcoming building code changes. The conference also highlighted new research, testing and technologies in structural engineering that can aid in improving the structural integrity of new and existing buildings.
